You have probably heard about this by now but so what.

A 17-year-old honor student who holds down two jobs and is putting her brother through college was jailed and fined $100 for truancy.

Rationale: “If you let one run loose, what are you gonna do with the rest of ‘em? Let them go too?”

This so-called judge ought to be disbarred.

Contact Judge Moriarty and tell him what you think.

[info]pyraxis says:

"This is the Stanford Prison Experiment happening in real life, every day, and nobody's yet been able to shut it down, because the lawyers and manipulators are too good at doing what they do.

"Anonymous is targeting the JRC. There is a National Day of Action on June 2 where people are going to the JRC to peacefully protest. There are links to petitions and contact information for government representatives here. Anyone who doesn't live close enough to go protest, the next thing to do is spread the word online."

For decades, the Judge Rotenberg Center in Canton, Massachusetts has been torturing and abusing people with disabilities in the name of treatment. Residents are subject to electric shocks, food deprivation, prolonged restraint and seclusion, and forced witness of these same tactics used against other residents.

This video of Andre McCollins, then-eighteen, who has behavioral and mental health issues, has been sealed by the courts for the last eight years. Yesterday, it played in open court during his trial against the Judge Rotenberg Center.

His crime against humanity? He didn't take off his coat when ordered to do so.

I know we said we were trying to stay away from autism stuff in April but [info]conuly brought this to our attention and we're passing the signal along. And yeah, I know it's Fox News. Well, a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Okay, well, I guess my job is done then! Go out, and carefully avoid buying any products that donate to Autism Speaks. There's going to be a lot of them for the next month, and AS is just as evil today as it was last year at this time.

This is about an artist whose dog, her friend from childhood, was the victim of a hit and run and the vet couldn't save him. She is taking commissions, $15 through paypal, for manga-style drawings, to pay the vet bills.

Unfortunately, she doesn't give her paypal address, but there are other ways to communicate with her to get it. We don't have a deviantart account so we started looking through her other contacts. She is [info]sex_o_clock, and we left a message, but she apparently hasn't updated that journal in a year and we don't know if she checks it.

But, she is also http://tatouji.tumblr.com and http://twitter.com/#!/tatouji and it's probably better to contact her there.

So please pass this along, and give something if you can.

Oak Park Woman Faces 93-Days in Jail For Planting Vegetable Garden

By ALEXIS WILEY
WJBK | myFOXDetroit.com

OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - "The price of organic food is kind of through the roof," said Julie Bass.

So, why not grow your own? However, Bass' garden is a little unique because it's in her front yard.

"We thought it'd be really cool to do it so the neighbors could see. The kids love it. The kids from the neighborhood all come and help," she said.

Bass' cool garden has landed her in hot water with the City of Oak Park. Code enforcement gave her a warning, then a ticket and now she's been charged with a misdemeanor.

"I think it's sad that the City of Oak Park that's already strapped for cash is paying a lot of money to have a prosecutor bothering us," Bass told FOX 2's Alexis Wiley.

"That's not what we want to see in a front yard," said Oak Park City Planner Kevin Rulkowski.

Why? The city is pointing to a code that says a front yard has to have suitable, live, plant material. The big question is what's "suitable?"

We asked Bass whether she thinks she has suitable, live, plant material in her front yard.

"It's definitely live. It's definitely plant. It's definitely material. We think it's suitable," she said.

So, we asked Rulkowski why it's not suitable.

"If you look at the definition of what suitable is in Webster's dictionary, it will say common. So, if you look around and you look in any other community, what's common to a front yard is a nice, grass yard with beautiful trees and bushes and flowers," he said.

[I promise not to do a rant about this. I really will restrain myself.....]

But when you look at front yards that are unsightly and overgrown, is Bass' vegetable garden really worth the city's time and money?

We asked Rulkowski what he would say to those who feel this is ridiculous.

"I would argue that you won't find that opinion from most people in Oak Park," he responded.

"I have a bunch of little children and we take walks to come by and see everything growing. I think it's a very wonderful thing for our neighborhood," said neighbor Devorah Gold.

"They don't have (anything) else to do (if) they're going to take her to court for a garden," said neighbor Ora Goodwin.

We did find one neighbor who wasn't a fan and thinks it needs to go.

"I know there's a backyard. Do it in the backyard," he said.

"They say, 'Why should you grow things in the front?' Well, why shouldn't I? They're fine. They're pretty. They're well maintained," said Bass.

It looks like this critical debate is headed for a jury trial and neither side is backing down.

"I could sell out and save my own self and just not have them bother me anymore, but then there's no telling what they're going to harass the next person about," Bass told us.

There's another pretrial scheduled for July 26. The next step could be a jury trial.

J.A. Bartlett says:

A few weeks back I wrote about the subject matter of country song lyrics. Country was once a personal music, albeit focused on love and loss. Today’s country, while vastly more interesting musically*, is stylized lyrically around a handful of tropes. The vulgarity of hip-hop and rap has been frequently discussed since the rise of those genres 25 years ago. The blues has always had its own language, and soul music expressed a particular take on the world as well. Yet even within their differences, we can guess that the various genres have a lot in common. Love songs, after all, are universal.

So we understand that genres differ, but we’ve never been able to see it graphically -- at least not until now. Over at Last.FM, a researcher analyzed the lyrics of 240,000 songs from various genres and generated word clouds based on the words that occur most frequently. The words are sorted a couple of different ways. One way finds the words that occur most often within each genre (not including words that don’t carry significant meaning, such as and, for, I, and you). By this analysis, love and time occur most frequently across all genres, except in hip-hop and rap, where the biggest word in both clouds is nigga, which is the sort of fact that comments on itself.

The research also includes a set of clouds that shows which words are characteristic of each genre. These words are intended to be analogous to search terms. According to the researcher, they are "the words which, if used as search terms for example, would be best at selecting songs from that genre correctly (true positives), while minimizing the number of songs retrieved from other genres (false positives)." It’s these clouds that are the most revealing about the intentions and preoccupations of each genre’s songwriters.

For country, the word country itself appears frequently, as baby, woman, lonely, guitar, heart, night, memories, road, good, and dream. Compare that to the broad genre of rock: time, love, things, world, heart, walk, wait, friend. In the blues we see woman, baby, babe, honey, darlin’, mama, lord, guitar, and trouble. In soul music, a remarkably small number of words jumps out of the cloud: love, baby, wanna, and ooh. And in the hip-hop cloud, it’s nigga, niggaz, shit, bitch, ass, and rhyme. Metal is equally predictable (and equally unattractive): fuck, dead, death, bleed, scream, hate, fear, and god.

The research also includes a chart showing the commonalities between the words, which shows (as you can probably guess) that hip-hop and rap are extreme outliers in terms of subject matter -- but they have less in common than you might expect. They share about the same number of words as do indie and country, which you probably wouldn’t have guessed. Another surprise: electronic music, thanks to its roots in house music**, is more closely related to soul and the blues than country, which was born from some of the same ancestors as soul and the blues.

Examining word clouds is a fascinating way to look at music, really, and I recommend you spend some time doing so in the next several days, as posts will continue to be light around these parts during our ongoing hiatus. The next one is scheduled for Monday, although I will try to get one together for earlier in the holiday weekend.

** This is obviously not the same electronic music which has its roots in German art music and involves things like theremins and John Cage.

What we found most interesting was the cloud for folk music. The one for goth music was nice too.

"My husband's temper finally went critical and physical and he's out of the house. he says he'll keep paying rent but he also is using that as an excuse for why he should stay here and can't get his own place, and I can't be dependent on him or I might take him back just because not having rent money might be scarier than he is. So I'm asking for donations, even from strangers on the internet, because I would rather be dependent on strangers than him right now. Feel free to link or whatever. So here we are drinking and watching Lizzie.

This is the first time we've seen it since Jade and Andy sat up one night in 1990 and wrote the original draft of this, which became the foundation of our WWIVnet BBS download section, which became the Astraea website.

That night, they drank half a bottle of Almaden White. Tonight, we're having a Polynesian Pearl Diver and may possibly make some popcorn.

This movie isn't any better now than it was then, but this time we're going to review the damn thing.

One of the reason I made a Pearl Diver is that this movie is in certain respects a lot like The Blue Gardenia, except no murders, no Raymond Burr, no Celia Lovsky sellin' flowers, and Johnny Mathis instead of Nat King Cole.

In that film you learn that you have to really watch it with Pearl Divers because they seem like just a fruit juice drink, like there's no booze in them, but there is, and it hits you about ten minutes later. That's just about right. One of these goes a long way.
